William Marshall Pullis and his wife Julia Seal Pullis,
founded the business in the late 1800’s. Their
son Clyde A. Pullis and his wife, Beatrice Swoyer Pullis,
later joined the business and continued its tradition.
In the 1930’s the Pullis family moved the funeral
home to its present location on East Pennsylvania Ave.
(Route 512). In the 1960’s, after the death
of Clyde Pullis, Nicholas V. Guerro and his wife Jeannine,
purchased the funeral home. The Guerro family operated
the funeral home until their retirement in September 1991. Nicholas
V. Guerro passed away, November 2, 2006, Jeannine resides
in Venice, FL.
In September of 1991, the Guerro family sold the
business
to Stephen J. Ruggiero, who is the sole proprietor of the
funeral home. To emphasize the continuation of service
provided by the previous management, Ruggiero renamed the
funeral home, Guerro & Ruggiero Funeral Home.
Many prominent Slate Belt citizens, including mayors,
fire
and police chiefs and clergy have had their funeral services
managed by the business. In addition, the business
organized the high profile funeral service for movie star
and one-time resident Jayne Mansfield.
Stephen is a 1984 graduate of Pen Argyl Area High School
and a 1987 graduate of Northampton Community College, where
he earned his degree in Funeral Service Education. He
served his internship with his cousin,
John T. Semmel,
owner of the Workinger-Semmel
Funeral Home and Crematorium,
Inc., York, PA.
After earning his funeral director’s
license and prior to purchasing the funeral home, Ruggiero
was employed
by several funeral homes in Eastern and Central
Pennsylvania. This vast experience combined with
his compassionate and caring personality enable him to
provide the highest level of service to families in need.
Stephen actively supports the community through several
community and professional organizations, including National
Funeral Directors Association, Pennsylvania Funeral Directors
Association, and the Eastern Pennsylvania Funeral Directors
Association, where he was president in 2002.
He is the son of William D. and Jane C. (Miller) Ruggiero. Stephen
has been a long-term resident of Pen Argyl, and his family
heritage is well known in the extended community. He
is married to the former Holly L. Coccia. |
